“Did you put a spell on me?” he asked. There wasn’t a trace of irony in his voice.

Now, this was hardly the first time I’ve been asked this question, though it was the first time I’d actually—inadvertently—done so.

It was a sunny and glorious Friday the 13th. In October, no less. This meant San Francisco’s summer was at its peak, the skies beaming cloudless blue overhead as Karl the Fog hid his face, all manner of outdoor autumnal activities were in fragrantly pumpkin-scented swing, and… I was on a date in the Marina with someone I knew it couldn’t possibly work out with.

In retrospect, I’m not sure why I said yes in the first place—or why I was driven to pursue other dates with him, both before and after this one.

Okay, yes I do. And yes, I had cast a love spell that day. But I promise it’s not what you think.
